The City of Toronto's annual Parks, Forestry and Recreation Community Garden Awards recognize outstanding front gardens that contribute to the beautification of the city through creative landscaping, colourful annual and perennial plantings, and well kept grounds. The winners for 2014 have been announced and were awarded last night.
All gardens belonging to residents and businesses with a street address in North York, Etobicoke York and Scarborough were eligible to be nominated.
Gardens were judged in late July to early August on criteria that included design, use of plant material, condition and maintenance, hard landscaping, environmental practices, community contribution and distinction.
Gardens are recognized in five categories: Residential – traditional; Residential – environmental/alternative; Commercial; High density; and Non-residential (schools, churches, etc.).
The following are the winning gardens of the 2014 Community Garden Awards:
Etobicoke/York
Traditional Garden: 10 Alanmeade Cres.
Alternative/Environmental Garden: 19 Paula Blvd.
Commercial Garden: Acadian Platers Co. Ltd., 315 Rexdale Blvd.
High Density Garden: High Park Condominium, 70 High Park Ave.
Scarborough
Traditional Gardens: 20 winners, two gardens in each of the wards 35 through 44 Alternative /Environmental Garden: 255 Huntsmill Blvd.
Commercial Garden: Ellesmere Industrial Courts, 1950 Ellesmere Rd.
High Density Garden: MTCC 624, 10 and 20 Dean Park Rd.
North York
Traditional Garden: 40 Wentworth Ave.
Alternative /Environmental Garden: 139 Cameron Ave.
Condominium / Apartment Garden: The Courtlands, 90 Fisherville Rd.
Non-Residential Garden: Drewry Secondary School, 70 Drewry Ave.
Gardens in that part of the City will be eligible for the 2015 Toronto Garden Awards.
