The City of Toronto today received the prestigious 2016 Road Safety Engineering Award for its Curb Radii Design Guidelines from the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC) at its annual conference in Toronto. These guidelines will become a standard for urban centres across the country. A curb radius (radii is the plural) is the curved part of a corner at an intersection connecting two roadways.
"This prestigious award recognizes the excellence of our staff in creating a new national standard for road safety and demonstrates Toronto's efforts in taking a leadership role in designing and building safer cities for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists," said Councillor Jaye Robinson (Ward 25 Don Valley West), Chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee.
The Curb Radii Design Guidelines, developed by staff in the Public Realm section of Transportation Services, consider various factors to determine curb radii at each intersection corner. The factors include road classification, truck volumes, expected vehicle types, land use, lane widths, intersection angle and the presence of bus routes and bike lanes. By using these guidelines, the goal is to improve safety for all road users as they travel.
Elements such as new geometric guidelines for city streets are part of Transportation Services' continued efforts to provide safe streets and they form part of the City's Road Safety Plan.
