Toronto Hydro gives top marks to Union Station Revitalization Project

September 8, 2016

Toronto Hydro has awarded the City of Toronto's Union Station Revitalization Project close to $1 million in incentives through the Save on Energy Retrofit program for the project's investment in energy-saving technology.

The incentive, which totalled $954,800, is one of the largest issued by Toronto Hydro under the Save on Energy Retrofit program. As part of the Union Station Revitalization Project, several chillers that previously cooled the station were removed and replaced with Enwave’s Deep Lake Water Cooling system.

"The City of Toronto is committed to finding opportunities to reduce electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions to help create a more livable city," said Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell (Ward 28 Toronto Centre-Rosedale). "The Union Station Revitalization Project is one of the ways the City is taking on a leadership role on environmental and urban energy issues."

The City of Toronto, like many other cities in the world, has set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent by the year 2050 to help reduce the most negative impact of climate change.

“These types of innovative projects are producing tremendous operational benefits and sustainable energy savings for the City,” said Chris Tyrrell, Executive Vice-President and Chief Customer Care and Conservation Officer, Toronto Hydro. “Toronto Hydro would like to congratulate the City of Toronto, and especially the Union Station project team, for their leadership in conservation.”

The Deep Lake Water Cooling system uses chilled water from Lake Ontario to provide air conditioning to Union Station during hot weather. This system, which is already in place at City Hall, Metro Hall and Old City Hall, reduces energy use by 90 per cent, which in turn significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions.

The electricity savings attributed to the Union Station Revitalization Project is 2,587,901 kilowatt hours a year. That is equivalent to • saving approximately 5,515 trees per year, or • removing 56 cars from the road, or • taking 216 homes off the grid.

The City is currently leading a multi-year revitalization at Union Station that will improve the quality and capacity of pedestrian movement, restore heritage elements and transform Union Station into a major destination. The revitalization is an $800-million City initiative supported by investments of $164 million from the Government of Canada and $172 million from the Government of Ontario.

Toronto Hydro owns and operates an electricity distribution system that delivers electricity to approximately 758,000 customers in Toronto. It is the largest municipal electricity distribution company in Canada and distributes approximately 19 per cent of the electricity consumed in the province of Ontario.

Toronto Hydro delivers Save on Energy programs on behalf of the Independent Electricity System Operator. Save on Energy provides Ontario’s residential and business customers with a wide range of tools, resources and incentives for energy conservation tailored to homes and businesses.
