City of Toronto issues first Toronto Environmental Progress Report

February 25, 2016

The City of Toronto has issued its 2015 Toronto Environmental Progress Report, the first report of its kind to document progress towards Toronto's environmental goals and priorities.

"Together as a community, Toronto is making progress towards the environmental targets set by City Council," said Councillor Michelle Holland (Ward 35 Scarborough Southwest), Chair of the City's Parks and Environment Committee. "There is much to celebrate. And while it's clear that we're moving in the right direction, there's still much more to do. This report makes it easy for residents to see where progress is being made and where more may be required for Toronto to achieve its environmental goals."

The report highlights many achievements through to the end of 2014, made in partnership with communities and stakeholders across the city.

Key achievements include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the number of urban trees, building infrastructure to support sustainable transportation and energy efficiency, reducing waste sent to landfills, and ensuring high-quality beaches and waterfront.

In addition to evaluating Toronto's progress, the report documents key policies, programs and plans, raises awareness of complex environmental issues, and celebrates the success of the City and its residents.
