City of Toronto receives awards for its efforts on behalf of United Way Toronto

January 29, 2015

The City of Toronto's United Way Employee Campaign is the proud recipient of two United Way Toronto awards – the Joint Labour and Management Campaign Spirit Award and the Public Sector Campaign Team Spirit Award – presented at United Way Toronto's annual recognition event.

"The Toronto Public Service had a great campaign for the United Way and continues to demonstrate a strong tradition of giving back to our community," said Mayor John Tory.

The awards were accepted last night by City Manager Joe Pennachetti and Campaign Co-Patrons John Livey, Deputy City Manager, and Tim Maguire, President of CUPE Local 79.

"The support we received from our unions and associations was instrumental in helping us to achieve our record fundraising amount of almost $1.5 million," said Pennachetti.

The Joint Labour and Management Campaign Award recognizes a campaign from either the public or private sector that exemplifies collaboration and teamwork between labour and management groups in their campaign. This is the second consecutive year the City has won the award. The collaboration is credited for a participation increase of five per cent from 2013 to 2014.

"City staff organized 290 special events and had record participation in many of them, including the CN Tower Climb," said Maguire. "City staff work hard every day to provide outstanding service and also demonstrate their commitment to help build a better Toronto though charitable giving."

The Public Sector Campaign Team Spirit Award is given to a workplace that executes an exemplary campaign through strong team structure, effective planning and co-ordination.

"Thanks to the support and dedication of 1,200 volunteers and our unions and associations, we were able to set a new fundraising record for the City, raising $1.466 million to support vulnerable residents in our community," said Livey. "The Toronto Public Service continues to show leadership not just by serving our residents but by giving back."

The Toronto Public Service, together with staff from Toronto Public Library, Toronto Zoo, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Toronto Parking Authority and Exhibition Place, raised $1.466 million last year on behalf of United Way Toronto. With support from all City unions and associations (CUPE Local 79, CUPE Local 416, the Toronto Professional Fire Fighters Association, TPLWU 4948 and COTAPSA), this year's campaign was supported by 68 divisional co-ordinators and over 1,200 ambassadors and volunteers.
